The Lost Dutchman gold mine is one of the most enduring legends of the American West.

It’s said to be hidden somewhere in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona, and its existence has tantalized treasure hunters for over a century.

The Legend Begins

The legend begins with Jacob Waltz, a German immigrant often referred to as “the Dutchman.” In the late 1800s, Waltz claimed to have discovered a rich gold mine in the Superstitions. He allegedly shared the secret with only a few people, and after his death, the location of the mine remained a mystery.  

Another element of the legend involves the Peralta family from Mexico. They are said to have discovered gold in the Superstitions decades before Waltz. Their attempts to transport the gold were allegedly thwarted by Apache attacks, leading to the loss of the mine’s location.  

Treasure Hunters and Tragedy

The legend of the Lost Dutchman gold mine has attracted countless treasure hunters over the years. Many have spent their lives searching for the elusive prize, often encountering harsh conditions, treacherous terrain, and even tragedy. Some have died in their quest, adding to the mystique of the mine.  

Is it Real?

Despite numerous attempts to find the Lost Dutchman gold mine, no definitive proof of its existence has ever been discovered. Many experts believe the legend is simply a myth, perpetuated by the allure of hidden treasure and the rugged beauty of the Superstition Mountains.

While the truth behind the Lost Dutchman gold mine may never be fully known, its legend continues to captivate people around the world. It serves as a reminder of the enduring human fascination with treasure, adventure, and the unknown.

High Grade Silver Ore Slab

Nice sawn vein specimen of fresh, unaltered high grade silver ore from the world-class Cobalt Ontario deposits. Sawn on one side only.  The deposit was described in Mineralogical Record, Volume 43, Number 6.  In general, veins are predominantly composed of carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite) with arsenides and sulpharsenides of Co, Ni and Fe with native Ag and Bismuth.  Most of this material has been squirreled away in collections by now, although specimens do occasionally come to market.

There are a few of these silver slabs available. The very bright silver really makes this piece stand out, but, unfortunately makes it all so hard to photograph. As an example the one pictured above is 66 grams for $45.
