Is There Gold in Peoria, Arizona? The Hidden History in Our Backyard

As a recreational Arizona gold prospector living in a retirement community right here in the area, I’m always amazed when I tell my neighbors and friends about the gold I’ve found—and am still finding—in and around Peoria.

It seems like most people just can’t believe it. The typical reaction is a raised eyebrow and a chuckle, as if the only place you can find gold around here is behind a glass counter in a local jewelry store. When folks think of Peoria, they picture master-planned neighborhoods, active adult communities, manicured golf courses, and quiet desert parks. If they think of gold at all, they assume you have to trek 40 miles northwest to Wickenburg, tackle the rugged slopes of the Bradshaw Mountains, or venture out to Rich Hill.

But if you know how to read the ground along the northern desert margins of Peoria—right along our foothill preserves, desert buttes, and dry washes—you’ll find that real Arizona gold is sitting right in our own backyard.

So, is there gold in Peoria, Arizona? The answer is a resounding yes.

Hard-Rock Reality: The Sunrise Relief Mine

While central and southern Peoria sit on deep, alluvial desert basin soil, pushing north toward Happy Valley Road and Lake Pleasant Parkway completely changes the geological landscape.

Just north of Happy Valley Road, near Calderwood Butte and the northern ridges, lies the historic Sunrise Relief Mine (also recorded in USGS archives as the Relief or Sunrise Mine).

Discovered in the early 1900s, the Sunrise Relief was a real, hard-rock producer operating right in North Peoria. Old-time miners targeted quartz vein systems cutting through metamorphic host rock, pulling out free-milling gold, silver, and copper. Operations continued intermittently over decades—ranging from deep underground shafts to later surface heap-leaching efforts. It stands as concrete proof that the rich hydrothermal systems that deposited gold across the state didn’t stop at the Peoria city line.

Reading the Ground: Quartz Outcroppings in Peoria’s Preserves

If you ever walk your dog or hike through the Peoria Regional Preserve or nearby Sunrise Mountain Preserve, keep a close eye on the trail.

As you move across the eastern portions of these northern preserve trails, you’ll notice a sudden and dramatic geological shift. The standard desert dirt gives way to heavy white quartz float, thick stringers, and jagged “blowouts” protruding right out of the host rock.

To an experienced prospector, that quartz is an instant signpost. Millions of years ago, intense hydrothermal activity forced superheated, mineral-rich liquid up through deep fault lines and fractures in the earth. As those quartz solutions cooled, they deposited minerals—frequently bringing iron sulfides, copper, and free gold along with them.

Old-timers used those exact white quartz outcroppings as “indicator rock” to trace mineral veins straight back to their source. Every time you walk across those quartz-heavy beds near the regional preserve, you are walking over the exact same geological formations that drew early 20th-century miners into the West Valley hills.

While large-scale industrial stamp mills were mostly built further north toward the Bradshaws, early prospectors regularly worked the desert expanses, alluvial fans, and ephemeral washes flanking the Agua Fria River and Lake Pleasant. Small-scale prospectors dry-washed the local desert gravels, looking for fine placer gold washed down from the surrounding mountains over thousands of years.

Today, much of North Peoria’s foothill country has been set aside for regional parks, municipal preserves, and neighborhoods. While recreational prospecting and mineral collection are restricted inside public municipal preserves, understanding local geology adds a whole new layer of appreciation to our local trails.

Next time someone tells you there’s no gold in Peoria, just smile and let them keep thinking it only comes from a jewelry store. Those of us who get out into the desert know better: when you know where to look, Peoria’s gold-mining roots are as real as it gets.
