Arizona Gold Prospecting Dangers – Gila Monster

Arizona gold medal detecting requires covering a lot of ground in the Sonoran desert.

Personally, prospecting around the Morristown Wickenburg areas for over the last 3 years I’ve seen all sorts of wildlife.

I’ve come across a number of wild  donkeys, huge jackrabbits and the number of rattlesnakes. But, with that said I have never seen a Gila monster, well, at least not yet.

Here are some interesting facts about the Arizona Gila Monster:

  • Venomous Lizard: The Gila Monster is the only venomous lizard native to the United States. Its venom is not as potent as some snakes, but its bite can be painful and cause swelling.
  •  Slow-Moving Giant: It’s the largest lizard in North America, reaching lengths of up to 22 inches and weighing over 3 pounds. Despite its size, it’s a slow-moving creature.   ·
  • Desert Dweller: Gila Monsters are well-adapted to the harsh desert environment. They can survive long periods without water by conserving moisture.   ·
  • Colorful Scales: Their distinctive black and pink or orange scales help them blend into their surroundings.   ·
  • Egg-Eaters: Gila Monsters are opportunistic feeders, primarily eating eggs, small mammals, and other lizards.   ·
  • Long Lifespan: They can live up to 20 years in the wild and even longer in captivity.   ·
  • Medical Marvel: A drug used to treat type 2 diabetes is derived from a component of the Gila Monster’s venom.If you encounter a Gila Monster in the wild, it’s best to admire it from a safe distance. They are generally docile creatures and will only bite if they feel threatened.

    Nice sawn vein specimen of fresh, unaltered high grade silver ore from the world-class Cobalt Ontario deposits. Sawn on one side only.  The deposit was described in Mineralogical Record, Volume 43, Number 6.  In general, veins are predominantly composed of carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite) with arsenides and sulpharsenides of Co, Ni and Fe with native Ag and Bismuth.  Most of this material has been squirreled away in collections by now, although specimens do occasionally come to market.
