Gold discoveries were quite significant for Arizona’s early development, though copper eventually became the bigger player. Here’s a breakdown of the impact:

• Early Population Boom: The gold rushes of the 1850s and 1860s, particularly in areas like the Bradshaw Mountains, attracted a large influx of prospectors and settlers. This led to the founding of towns, increased economic activity, and the need for infrastructure like roads and stores.

• Transportation & Communication: The gold industry spurred the development of transportation networks to move people, supplies, and of course, gold. This included wagon trails, stagecoach lines, and eventually, railroads. Improved communication became crucial for miners and businesses.

• Social Upheaval: The gold rush era wasn’t all positive. Conflicts arose between miners, Native American populations, and the U.S. government over land and resources. Lawlessness and violence were also common features of these boomtowns.

• Shifting Focus: While gold brought initial growth, copper ultimately became Arizona’s mining king. However, the infrastructure and development spurred by the gold rush provided a foundation for the later success of copper mining.

Overall, gold discoveries played a crucial role in Arizona’s early development by attracting people, boosting the economy, and laying the groundwork for future industries.

High Grade Silver Ore Slab

Nice sawn vein specimen of fresh, unaltered high grade silver ore from the world-class Cobalt Ontario deposits. Sawn on one side only.  The deposit was described in Mineralogical Record, Volume 43, Number 6.  In general, veins are predominantly composed of carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite) with arsenides and sulpharsenides of Co, Ni and Fe with native Ag and Bismuth.  Most of this material has been squirreled away in collections by now, although specimens do occasionally come to market.

There are a few of these silver slabs available. The very bright silver really makes this piece stand out, but, unfortunately makes it all so hard to photograph. As an example the one pictured above is 66 grams for $45.
