The Silver Delusion: Why “HODLing” is a Strategy for Losers
(“HODL” is an investment slang term that stands for “Hold On for Dear Life.” It describes the strategy of refusing to sell an asset regardless of how high—or low—the price goes. While popular online, it is often the quickest way to watch a fortune evaporate.)
We’ve watched silver and gold go on an absolute tear over the last year. In 2025, silver didn’t just move—it exploded, finishing the year up over 140%. Now, in early 2026, with prices hovering in the $75–$95 range, the “True Believers” are coming out of the woodwork. They’re dreaming of $150 or $200 silver and vowing to never sell.
Silver Market Outlook 2026
But history has a message for those people, and it isn’t a kind one: You can never go broke taking a profit. In fact, the people who refuse to sell during these unusual, parabolic moves are usually the ones who end up holding the bag for decades.
The 45-Year Lesson of the Hunt Brothers
Look back at the last time silver did this. When the Hunt Brothers tried to corner the market in 1980, silver spiked to nearly $50. The people who bought at the top and vowed to “HODL” didn’t just lose money—they lost their lives waiting.
Most of those investors have likely passed away by now. If they haven’t, they spent 45 years—nearly half a century—just waiting for the price to get back to where they started. That isn’t “investing.” That’s a hostage situation.
The “Hidden Tax”: What Your Dealer Isn’t Telling You
A lot of people think that if the “Spot Price” on the news says $78, their silver is worth $78. Wrong. Unless you are trading paper contracts, you are paying a massive “Dealer Tax” on both ends of the trade. You pay a premium over spot to buy it, and you take a haircut under spot to sell it.
| Dealer Category | Typical Buy Price (What you pay) | Typical Sell Price (What they pay you) | The “Round Trip” Loss |
| Online Dealer #1 | Spot + $6.00 ($84.00) | Spot – $4.00 ($74.00) | $10.00 / oz (12%) |
| Online Dealer #2 | Spot + $8.00 ($86.00) | Spot – $5.50 ($72.50) | $13.50 / oz (16%) |
| Local Coin Shop | Spot + $10.00 ($88.00) | Spot – $7.00 ($71.00) | $17.00 / oz (20%) |
Note: For large physical holdings, you also have to factor in storage and insurance costs, which further eat into your “gains.” ¹
The 2026 Opportunity Cost: Silver vs. Cash
Silver pays you zero interest. In fact, because of the spreads above, it starts you off in a deep hole.
Compare that to the current 2026 interest rate environment. Right now, you can walk into a bank and get a 1-Year CD yielding 4.2%, or buy 3-Month T-Bills yielding around 3.6%.
If you take your silver profits at $78/oz and move them into a CD, your money is finally working for you instead of you working to protect a pile of metal. Silver doesn’t pay you to wait. Uncle Sam and the banks do.
The 50% Correction is Coming
When you see an explosive, vertical move like the one we’ve just witnessed, a correction isn’t just a possibility—it’s a mathematical certainty. Historically, these massive rallies often end in a 50% correction.
Imagine silver hits $90. The “moon-shot” crowd starts screaming for $200. Then the correction hits, and suddenly it’s back at $45. If you still love silver, why would you sit there and watch your net worth get cut in half?
The smartest move is to sell into the mania, take your 4% guaranteed return in a CD, and wait. If you’re right about silver’s long-term future, you can buy back in after the correction. You’ll end up with twice as much silver and a pocket full of interest.
The Bottom Line: Don’t Fall for “This Time is Different”
Don’t be the person holding a bar of silver in 2070, still waiting for it to “recover.” And most importantly, don’t be in the camp of those who say, “this time is different.” How many times have we heard that phrase right before a major crash? Whether it’s tech stocks, real estate, or precious metals, people always find a reason to believe the old rules don’t apply anymore. They tell themselves the supply is too low or the demand is too high—only to end up losing big bucks when reality sets in.
The market has a way of humbling anyone who thinks they’ve found a way to cheat the cycle. Take the profit. Let the dreamers hold the bag.
¹ Storage and insurance costs typically do not apply to small personal holdings kept at home, but represent a significant recurring expense for institutional or large-scale physical investors.

High Grade Silver Ore Slab

silver slab – example only
Nice sawn vein specimen of fresh, unaltered high grade silver ore from the world-class Cobalt Ontario deposits. Sawn on one side only. The deposit was described in Mineralogical Record, Volume 43, Number 6. In general, veins are predominantly composed of carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite) with arsenides and sulpharsenides of Co, Ni and Fe with native Ag and Bismuth. Most of this material has been squirreled away in collections by now, although specimens do occasionally come to market.

There are a few of these silver slabs available. The very bright silver really makes this piece stand out, but, unfortunately makes it all so hard to photograph. As an example the one pictured above is 66 grams for $85.
