Tungsten Gold Fakes

For centuries, gold has been a universally accepted store of wealth. Its unique density, luster, and non-corrosive properties have made it both desirable and relatively easy to authenticate. However, in recent years, sophisticated counterfeiters have perfected a new breed of “super fakes” that are tricking even experienced jewelers and sophisticated machines. If you own or plan to buy physical gold, understanding this threat is crucial.

The “Tungsten” Trick: Identical Weight, Hidden Deception

The primary weapon in the counterfeiter’s arsenal is Tungsten. This dense metal is almost identical in specific gravity to gold ( for tungsten vs. for gold). This means a 1 oz gold coin with a tungsten core will have the exact same weight and dimensions as a genuine coin, making it undetectable by scales and calipers.

How “Super Fakes” Fool Traditional Tests

Counterfeiters exploit the limitations of common testing methods:

  1. Thick Gold Plating: Fakes are created with a core of tungsten (or another cheaper metal) surrounded by a substantial layer of real gold, sometimes hundreds of microns thick.

  2. Bypassing XRF: X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) machines, common in many jewelry stores, only analyze the surface layer (typically 10-20 microns deep). With thick plating, an XRF will read 99.9% pure gold, giving a false sense of security.

  3. Acid Tests: Since the outer layer is genuine gold, acid tests will react as expected, further deceiving the unwary.

  4. Gold Bars are Vulnerable Too: Large gold bars (e.g., 10 oz, 1 kilo) are even easier targets. Counterfeiters can drill out the center, insert tungsten slugs, and then re-seal the bar with genuine gold, making detection even harder without penetrating tests.

Protecting Your Investment: Essential Gold Testing Machines

To safeguard against these sophisticated tungsten fakes, don’t rely on basic visual or acid tests. Insist that your dealer uses one of these advanced verification methods:

Testing MethodHow it WorksDetection CapabilitiesApprox. Cost (New)
Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal VerifierUses electromagnetic waves to measure resistivity through the entire item.Excellent for detecting internal tungsten or other foreign metals in coins and small bars.$700 – $1,500
Ultrasonic Thickness GaugeSends sound waves through the metal; measures the time it takes for the wave to reflect back.Detects variations in sound speed, revealing internal changes like tungsten slugs. Ideal for bars and thicker items.$1,000 – $5,000+
Specific Gravity Test (Advanced)A precise method involving weighing the item in air and then in water to calculate its exact density.Highly accurate for detecting density differences, but requires careful execution and exact measurements. Can be affected by air bubbles.Minimal equipment cost (scale, beaker), but requires skill.
X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) AnalyzerShoots X-rays at the surface to identify elemental composition.DOES NOT DETECT THICK-PLATED FAKES. Only analyzes surface layer (approx. 10-20 microns deep).$15,000 – $30,000+

Investor Takeaway: If a dealer relies solely on XRF for 1 oz coins or larger bars, they are likely not equipped to detect the most advanced counterfeits. Always ask about their specific gravity, ultrasonic, or Sigma Metalytics testing procedures.
