GPX 5000 Gold Metal Detecting

A good morning out in the Victorian goldfields. The 12″ Evolution Nugget Finder coil on the mighty Minelab GPX 5000 was producing the gold.

Sure this is an older video, back when the 5000 was the flagship of the Minelab line. Now, as technology has improved, the new flagship seems to be the Minelab 6000, or depending on your opinion the Minelab 7000.

Now, I’m certainly no expert on all three of these machines, but I have been using the GPS 5000 for about 18 months so far. So, I guess what I’m going to say is somewhat biased, but I’ve been out with other Prospectors who were using both the 6000 and 7000. So, from my own in the field observations, I can certainly agree that both to 6000 & 7000 can find real tiny pieces of gold that my 5000, even with a smaller coil cannot detect.

Now, with that said, I do have to wonder if it’s really worth it to get the 6000 or 7000 when a good used 5000 can be picked up for about $3,000! Currently in our said economic state, (I believe the current administration’s spending billions like a drunken sailor, and declaring war on fossil fuels, was the main cause of our sky high inflation) dropping six grand or more for the GPS 6000, and much more for the 7000, really revolves around how much better or more productive you feel you’re going to be over picking up a good used GPX 5000.

I’d venture to believe that there’s really no definitive answer to my question above. As with most large expenditures, it really comes down to each individual’s owner valuation of a cost-benefit analysis between the machines. Yes, I believe that if I asked 10 different prospectors what they thought concerning this question, I bet they’re still wouldn’t be a definitive consensus.

So, if you have or have been using any of these three fine machines, how about giving us your opinion for a prospector picking up a good use 5000 vs. the 6,000 or 7,000?
