Seasoning A Gold Pan
Seasoning a Plastic Gold Prospecting Pan
Why Season a Plastic Pan? A new plastic gold pan often has a smooth finish that can cause tiny gold particles to slip away.
Seasoning the pan roughens the surface, creating more friction and helping to trap gold particles.
Seasoning A Gold Pan
Here’s how to season your plastic gold pan:
- Scrub with Dish Soap and Scrubby Pad:
- Add a squirt of dish soap and water to the pan.
- Scrub the entire surface of the pan, including the ridges, with a scrubby pad. This helps remove any oils or residue left from the manufacturing process.
- Add Sand and Scrub:
- Pour a small amount of sand into the pan.
- Scrub the sand around the pan, focusing on the riffles (the ridges at the bottom of the pan). This will create tiny scratches and roughen the surface.
- Rinse and Dry:
- Rinse the pan thoroughly to remove all the sand and soap.
- Dry the pan completely.
Additional Tips:
- Use Fine-Grit Sandpaper: If you prefer, you can use fine-grit sandpaper to create the scratches.
- Test the Pan: After seasoning, test the pan with a small amount of dirt and water to see if the gold particles are being trapped. If necessary, repeat the seasoning process.
Remember: A well-seasoned pan can significantly improve your gold prospecting results. By following these steps, you’ll ensure that your plastic gold pan is ready to help you find those precious nuggets.
