The area’s gold deposits were primarily placer deposits, meaning that the gold particles were concentrated in the gravel and sand of streambeds and terraces. Prospectors used various methods, such as panning, sluicing, and dredging, to extract the gold from the sediment.

The San Domingo Wash area continued to be a popular destination for gold prospectors throughout the 20th century. While the intensity of mining activity has fluctuated over the years, there are still opportunities for recreational prospecting in the area today.
